What is a UTM?

UTM stands for Unified Threat Management. It is the evolution of the traditional firewall into an all-inclusive security product that has the ability to perform multiple security functions in one single appliance: network firewalling, network intrusion prevention and gateway antivirus (AV), gateway anti-spam, VPN, content filtering, load balancing and on-appliance reporting.

Reliability

The Fortigate is a hardware device with few moving parts making it less susceptible to hardware failures than PC hardware based firewalls. Also, unlike PC based firewalls the entire device config can be backed up and reimported into other Fortigate UTMs. The Fortigate device also supports multiple internet links, including 3G, for redundant failover and load balancing.

Antivirus / Antispam / Intrusion Detection

The device can scan all incoming and outgoing traffic for the presence of any virus, worm or spam email. This acts as an extra layer on top of locally installed protection and will also cover machines that may not have had active protection installed on them (ie. visitors or clients using your internal network).

Application Control

This gives control over what applications can be accessed from inside the network. Applications can be identified as part of a group and restrictions can be enforced based on the user, group or even the time of day.

Web Filtering

Contains many predefined categories for blocking particular types of content that are deemed inappropriate. This identifies unwanted content by phrase matching, known addresses and content profiles.
